Speaking: Fluency & Coherence C2
Impromptu Speeches on Abstract/Complex Topics
Listen to the scenario audio here.
Scenario: The "Impossible" Question 💬
At a C2 level, you're expected to handle difficult, abstract questions in real-time, such as in a Q&A session or a high-level discussion. The goal isn't just to *answer*, but to provide a structured, thoughtful *analysis*.
C2 Impromptu Frameworks: Your Mental Toolkit
C2 speakers don't panic. They have mental models ready. When asked a complex question, you have about 30 seconds to "buy time" and choose a structure.
Step 1: Acknowledge & Buy Time (Don't just say "Um...")
Use these to sound thoughtful while your brain works.
- That's a multifaceted question.
- To give that the consideration it deserves...
- That's a profound point. Let me break that down.
Step 2: Choose Your Structure
Best for social, political, or business issues.
- Problem: "The core issue we're facing is..."
- Solution: "A potential way to address this would be..."
- Vision: "If we did that, we could imagine a future where..."
Best for abstract or philosophical debates (like the scenario).
- Thesis: "On one hand, it's true that..."
- Antithesis: "However, on the other hand, we must consider..."
- Synthesis: "Therefore, the reality is a synthesis of these two..."
Pronunciation Tip
🗣️ Strategic Pacing: The Power of the Pause
At a C2 level, fluency is not speed. It is control. When giving an impromptu speech, native speakers use pauses to sound more thoughtful and authoritative, not less fluent.
Don't rush to fill the silence. Use a pause to let your "buying time" phrase land, and use it again to emphasize your key points.
Practice: "That's... a very profound question. [PAUSE] From my perspective... [PAUSE] the core of the issue... is not technology... [PAUSE] but intent."

Your Mission: The 60-Second Challenge ⭐
Your mission is to deliver a 60-second impromptu speech on a complex topic. Choose one of the prompts below. You have 30 seconds (and *only* 30 seconds) to plan your response using one of the frameworks.
C2 Prompts:
- What is the future of "truth" in the age of disinformation?
- Is global governance an achievable dream or a dangerous fantasy?
- Does true altruism (helping others for no reward) really exist?
Task: Record yourself. When you listen back, check for these three things:
- Did you use a clear "buying time" phrase at the start?
- Did you follow a clear logical structure (e.g., Thesis/Antithesis/Synthesis)?
- Did you use strategic pausing to sound thoughtful, not rushed?
