Speaking: Fluency and Coherence A1 - Lesson 2
Using "and" to Connect Simple Ideas
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to connect two simple ideas using the word "and" to make your speaking more fluent and natural.
The Big Idea: Connect Your Ideas with "and"
In the last lesson, we learned to speak in full phrases. Now, we will learn to connect two phrases or ideas together. The easiest way to do this is with the word "and"1. This stops your speaking from sounding choppy and repetitive.
Look at the difference:
Choppy Speaking (Separate Ideas) | Fluent Speaking (Connected with "and") |
---|---|
I like rice. I like fish. | I like rice and fish. |
The coffee is delicious2. The coffee is cheap3. | The coffee is delicious and cheap. |
I am a student. I live in Siem Reap. | I am a student and I live in Siem Reap. |

Pronouncing "and" for Fluency
To sound more fluent, native speakers often pronounce "and" very quickly and softly. It can sound like "an" or even just "n".
- Full Pronunciation: "I like rice... AND... fish." (This is okay, but slow.)
- Fluent Pronunciation: "I like rice-an-fish." (This is much smoother.)
Listen carefully to the audio guide. I will use the fast, fluent pronunciation. Your goal is to connect the words smoothly.
Three Ways to Use "and"
Here are three easy patterns for using "and".
1. To connect two nouns (things or people)
Formula: Noun + and + Noun
- I like mangoes and bananas.
- My teacher is kind and funny.
2. To connect two adjectives (describing words)
Formula: Adjective + and + Adjective
3. To connect two simple sentences (two actions or ideas)
Formula: [Full Sentence 1] + and + [Full Sentence 2]
- I work at a hotel and I study English at night.
- My brother lives in Phnom Penh and he is a doctor.
Practice Connecting Ideas
Activity 1: Combine the Sentences
Read the two short sentences. Your task is to combine them into one fluent sentence using "and".
- My friend is tall. My friend is handsome. -> You say: "My friend is tall and handsome."
- I can speak Khmer. I can speak a little English. -> You say: "I can speak Khmer and a little English."
- The food is delicious. The food is expensive. -> You say: "The food is delicious and expensive."
Activity 2: Tell Me Two Things
Work with a partner. Take turns answering these questions using "and".
- What are two foods you like? (Example: "I like noodles and chicken.")
- What are two words to describe the weather today? (Example: "The weather is hot and humid.")
- What are two things you did this morning? (Example: "I ate breakfast and I came to school.")
Your Connection Mission
This week in Siem Reap, your mission is to make sentences with "and".
Try to say at least three sentences this week that connect two ideas. For example, when someone asks what you like to eat, don't just say "pork". Say, "I like pork and rice."
