What You Will Learn
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Understand that pronouns (like he, she, it, they) replace nouns.
- Identify which noun a pronoun is referring to in simple sentences.
- Use this understanding to better follow who or what is being talked about in a text.
Hello Cambodian Learners!
When we speak or write, we often don't want to repeat the same noun (like a person's name or a thing) over and over again. Instead, we use short words called pronouns. For example, instead of saying "Sokha likes noodles. Sokha eats noodles every day," we can say "Sokha likes noodles. He eats noodles every day." Understanding who or what "he," "she," "it," or "they" refers to is very important for good reading comprehension!
What are Pronouns?
Pronouns are words that take the place of nouns. Here are some common ones:
- He refers to a boy or man.
- She refers to a girl or woman.
- It refers to a thing or an animal.
- They refers to more than one person, thing, or animal.
When a pronoun is used, it "refers back" to a noun that was usually mentioned before. This is called pronoun referencing.
Examples: Click the sentences to hear them.
Here, "He" refers to "My brother".
Here, "It" refers to "a new dress". (The dress is red)
Here, "They" refers to "The students".

How do you feel about this lesson?
Note for Educators/Platform Development: This lesson focuses on simple subject pronoun referencing (he, she, it, they). Activities involve identifying the antecedent (the noun the pronoun refers to) and choosing the correct pronoun for a context. Ensure Web Speech API is supported. Use clear, unambiguous sentences where the antecedent is obvious and close to the pronoun. Placeholder images are used minimally as the focus is on text connection.
