Specific Focus: Drawing Simple Conclusions Based on Information in the Text
What You Will Learn
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Understand what it means to "draw a conclusion" from a text.
- Identify pieces of information in a text that lead to a logical conclusion.
- Combine information from the text with your own knowledge to make simple conclusions.
- Choose the most reasonable conclusion from a set of options based on a text.
Hello Cambodian Learners!
When you read, sometimes the writer doesn't say everything directly, but they give you enough information to figure things out for yourself. This is like solving a small puzzle! When you put the clues from the text together with what you already know, you can make a smart guess called a conclusion. For example, if you read that someone is packing a suitcase with warm clothes and a map of Sapa, Vietnam, you can conclude they are probably planning a trip to a cold place.
Drawing Conclusions
Drawing a conclusion means forming an idea or judgment that is not explicitly stated in the text, but is based on the information given and your own logical thinking.
It's a step beyond just understanding what's implied; it's about figuring out what the information means or what might happen next as a result.
Example: Click the text to hear it.
What can you conclude about Sophea?
The best conclusion is B. She is probably feeling stressed and hungry.
Clues: "big exam," "studying all day," "not eaten dinner," "looking at her watch." These suggest stress and hunger.
