Goal: Understand what is not said directly. Recognize hidden meanings, attitudes, and cultural references.

1. Critical Terminology

Implicit មិនច្បាស់លាស់ (Suggested, not stated)
Subtext អត្ថន័យបង្កប់ (Hidden meaning)
Allusion ការលើកយកមកនិយាយដោយប្រយោល (Cultural reference)
Nuance អត្ថន័យល្អិតល្អន់ (Subtle difference)

2. The Iceberg Principle

In sophisticated texts, only 10% is visible (Explicit). 90% is hidden underwater (Implicit).

EXPLICIT: Words, Facts
IMPLICIT: Tone, Bias, Culture

Example: "He's a real Einstein."
Explicit: His name is Einstein. (False)
Implicit: He is very smart (or sarcastically, very stupid).

3. Cultural Allusions (Click to Reveal)

Sophisticated English often references history, literature, or myths.

"A White Elephant" 🐘
Meaning: Something expensive to maintain but useless.
Origin: Ancient kings of Siam gave white elephants to enemies to bankrupt them.
"Achilles' Heel" 🦶
Meaning: A small but fatal weakness.
Origin: Greek myth of Achilles, who was invulnerable except for his heel.

Boss: "Interesting strategy." Subtext: I don't believe you / I disapprove.
