warning The Dictionary Trap!

Translating literally will make you miss the nuance.

(កុំអានអត្ថបទកម្រិត C1 ដោយបកប្រែពាក្យមួយៗឱ្យសោះ! វចនានុក្រមប្រាប់អ្នកត្រឹមតែអត្ថន័យត្រង់ ប៉ុន្តែមិនប្រាប់ពី "អារម្មណ៍" ដែលបង្កប់ក្នុងពាក្យនោះទេ។)
"He is a notorious leader."
Dictionary: Famous/Well-known. close
(If you just translate "famous", you miss the truth. Notorious means famous for a BAD reason. គាត់ល្បីល្បាញដោយសាររឿងអាក្រក់។)

Teacher Kanha, how do I learn all these subtle meanings (connotations)? My dictionary just gives me the direct translation.

Hi Sovan! That is exactly why C1 is challenging. You need to upgrade to an English-to-English "Learner's Dictionary" (like Oxford or Cambridge). They explain the *feeling* of the word, not just the translation. Also, reading widely exposes you to the context! menu_book

Find the core Subject and Verb first. Ignore everything between commas (,) or dashes (-) initially. Once you know "WHO did WHAT", you can go back and read the extra details. content_cut

Yes! It means "famous for a bad reason" (like a criminal). If you want to say someone is famous for a good reason, use "renowned" or "celebrated". warning
