B2 Lesson 2: Following Intricate Plots and Character Development in Fiction

Reading Between the Lines of a Story

When we read fiction at the B1 level, we are not just readers; we are analysts. We look deeper than just the events to understand the story's structure and the characters' journeys.

Today, we will learn to analyze an intricate plot1 by identifying its core conflict3 and resolution5. We will also look for character development2—how a character changes from the beginning of the story to the end.

How to Analyze a Narrative

  1. Identify the Plot: Look for the main problem (the conflict), the most exciting part (the climax4), and how the problem is solved (the resolution).
  2. Track Character Development: Ask yourself: How does the main character feel or think at the beginning? What happens to them? How have their feelings or ideas changed by the end?
  3. Connect Plot and Character: Think about how the events of the plot caused the character to change.

Practice Narrative: "The Monsoon Harvest"

Let's read this short story, paying attention to the plot and the main character, Rithy.

Rithy, a young farmer, looked anxiously at the sky. For weeks, the sun had been relentless, and his newly planted rice paddies were dry and cracked. If the monsoon rains didn't arrive soon, the entire harvest would be lost. He felt a growing sense of despair, as his family depended entirely on this crop.

The next day, an old farmer from the neighboring village, Mr. Sophal, visited him. "Looking at the sky will not bring you water today," Mr. Sophal said calmly, pointing to a small, overgrown stream at the edge of Rithy's property. "But the earth can." Rithy had always dismissed the stream as too small to be useful. He was skeptical, but his desperation pushed him to listen.

Following Mr. Sophal's practical advice, they spent the entire day digging a narrow channel from the stream to the paddies. It was exhausting work under the hot sun. Just as they finished the final connection, a small trickle of water—more precious than gold—began to flow into the first paddy. Rithy watched, breathless, as the dark, thirsty earth drank it in.

The tiny stream did not provide enough water to save the entire crop, but it saved most of it. As he looked over his partially green fields that evening, Rithy felt a new respect for the old farmer's wisdom. He realized that a solution can often be found not by waiting for a miracle from the sky, but by working with the resources right under your feet.

Let's analyze the story:

  • Plot Conflict: Rithy's crops are dying from lack of rain (Man vs. Nature).
  • Plot Climax: When the water first trickles into the dry paddy.
  • Character at the beginning: Rithy is anxious, desperate, and only hopes for rain. He is skeptical of old ideas.
  • Character at the end (Development): Rithy is respectful, wise, and understands the value of practical, small solutions. The events of the plot caused him to change his perspective.

Practice Quiz

Read the situation and answer the question.

"Vanna was terrified of speaking English. When a tourist asked her for directions, she would usually blush, shake her head, and walk away quickly. One day, a tourist couple looked very lost and worried. Their young daughter was crying. Vanna could see they needed help. Taking a deep breath, she walked over and, in slow but clear English, asked 'Can I help you?' After she successfully gave them directions, she felt a huge sense of pride and confidence she had never felt before."

How does Vanna's character develop in this story?

  • A. She decides that she does not like tourists.
  • B. She goes from being scared of speaking English to feeling confident about it.
  • C. She learns how to give very good directions.

Answer: B. The story's main point is not about directions (C) or tourists (A), but about her internal change from being "terrified" to feeling "pride and confidence" in her English ability.
