What You Will Learn

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Understand what "plot" means in a story (the main events and their order).
  • Identify the sequence of events in a short narrative.
  • Recognize sequence words (like first, next, then, finally) that signal the order of events.
  • Put jumbled events from a story into the correct order.

Hello Cambodian Learners!

Stories are exciting because things happen in a certain order! This order of events is called the plot. Understanding the plot helps you follow the story and enjoy it more. Think about telling someone what you did yesterday – you'd tell them the events in order. It's the same when reading a story, maybe about an adventure near the Sangkae River in Battambang or a traditional Cambodian folktale.

Understanding Plot and Sequence

The plot of a narrative is the series of events that make up the story. These events happen in a specific sequence or order.

Words like First, Next, Then, After that, and Finally are often used to show the order of events.

A simple plot often has:

  • Beginning: Introduces characters and setting; the start of the action.
  • Middle: Main events happen; there might be a problem or challenge.
  • End: The problem is solved; the story concludes.

The Clever Rabbit

Clever Rabbit First, a clever rabbit wanted to cross a wide river to get to the tasty carrots on the other side. But the river was full of crocodiles!
Next, the rabbit had an idea. He told the crocodiles he needed to count them for the King. The crocodiles lined up across the river.
Then, the rabbit hopped on each crocodile's back, counting them as he went. "One, two, three..."
Finally, when he reached the other side, he thanked the crocodiles and ran off to eat the carrots!
