Strategic Flexibility
C1 readers do not read everything the same way. They adjust their approach based on the text's genre and the specific task at hand.
Strategy 1: Skimming speed
Strategy 2: Scanning radar
Strategy 3: Close Reading find_in_page
Do not use Close Reading for everything!
2. Select Strategy: Skim, Scan, or Close Read.
3. Switch if needed: E.g., Scan to find the date, then Close Read that specific sentence.

Mastery Discussion
That is the most common challenge, Lisa! It takes discipline. Try using a timer. Give yourself only 30 seconds to read a full page. Your brain will naturally panic and start skipping to the headings and first sentences! timer
Is scanning useful when reading a novel?
Rarely! Scanning is for finding facts (dates, names, places). Novels are narratives meant to be experienced. You would generally use Close Reading for a novel, though you might Skim if you are just looking for the overall plot. auto_stories
If I am taking an exam like IELTS, which strategy should I use?
ALL OF THEM! That is exactly what this lesson is about (Flexibility). You Skim to understand the topic, Scan to find the keyword from the question, and then Close Read that specific sentence to find the correct answer! psychology_alt
Teacher Kanha, I always try to read every single word. How do I force myself to skim?
