Sociolinguistics
At C2, we don't just translate words. We analyze WHY people speak the way they do based on their identity, culture, and context.

Code-Switching 🔄
Code-switching is when a speaker alternates between two or more languages, dialects, or registers in the context of a single conversation. It is a highly advanced communicative skill, not a sign of poor language ability.
- To convey a specific emotion
- Because a word exists in one language but not the other. ដើម្បីចុះចំណោមគេ, ដើម្បីបង្ហាញអារម្មណ៍, ឬនៅពេលពាក្យមួយគ្មានការបកប្រែចំ។
Prescriptivism vs. Descriptivism
Believing there is only ONE strictly "correct" way to speak. (គិតថាមានតែភាសាស្តង់ដារទើបត្រឹមត្រូវ)
Observing and accepting how language is actually used by people in real life. (សង្កេត និងទទួលស្គាល់ការប្រើប្រាស់ជាក់ស្តែង)

Not quite! "Jargon" is professional/technical language (like lawyers using "affidavit" or doctors using "myocardial infarction"). "Slang" is very informal, casual language used in social groups (like saying "spill the tea" or "ghosted"). 👩⚖️ vs 📱
Why do my friends from Phnom Penh use different words than my friends in Battambang?
That is a perfect example of a "Dialect" (Regional Variation)! Languages change naturally over distance and time. Neither is "wrong", they are just different varieties of Khmer. 🗺️
Is standard English the only "correct" English?
From a C2 descriptivist view, NO! Standard English is the sociolect of people with formal education and power, making it useful for international business and academics. But other vernaculars (like AAVE or Singlish) are perfectly "correct" within their own communities. Context is king! 👑
Is "slang" the same as "jargon"?
