Listening: Listening for Gist B1 - Lesson 1: Understanding the Main Points of Clear Standard Speech on Familiar Matters (work, school, leisure)

Understanding Main Points in Talks

CEFR Level B1

Lesson Goals

In this lesson, you will practice identifying the main points or key ideas in short talks about familiar matters like work, school, and hobbies.

What are Main Points?

At the B1 level, you need to understand more than just the topic. You need to understand the main ideas the speaker wants to share. This is a key skill for meetings, classes, and detailed conversations.

Imagine you are listening to a news report about a new bridge being built. The small details might be the color or the number of workers. The main points would be: 1. Where the new bridge is, and 2. How it will help people travel faster.

As you listen, ask yourself: "What are the 2-3 most important ideas here?"

Key Tip: Listen for Signal Words

Speakers often use "signal words" to introduce their main points. Listening for these words can help you focus on the most important ideas. Look for words and phrases like:

  • "First..., Second..., Finally..."
  • "The most important thing is..."
  • "My main point is..."
  • "Another reason is..."

When you hear these signals, pay close attention to what comes next!

Practice Activities

Listen to the talks in the audio player. For each one, choose the answer that best describes the main points.

  1. Talk 1: About Work
"My name is Srey Pov, and I am the manager of a small hotel in Siem Reap. The work can be very busy... However, there are two things I truly enjoy about my job. First, I love meeting people from all over the world... Second, I am proud of my team. We work together like a community..."
