What's the Big Idea?
Lesson Goals
- Understand the main topic of a conversation.
- Ignore small details to focus on the "Gist" (Big Idea).
- Identify topics like Hobbies, Food, and Daily Routine.
When you listen to English, don't try to translate every word. Instead, ask yourself: "What are they talking about?" This is called listening for the Main Point.
1. Common Topics
We often talk about these three things in daily life. Look for related words:
(Sports, Art)
(Cooking, Eating)
(Work, Sleep)
2. Don't Get Stuck on Details!
Sometimes you hear a word you don't know (a detail). Don't panic! Listen to the rest of the sentence to find the main idea.
Speaker: "I went to the [unknown word] yesterday. I ran for 30 minutes and lifted some weights."
Main Point: Exercise / Gym (because of "ran" and "lifted"). The unknown word doesn't matter!
Strategy: Repetition
Speakers often repeat the most important words. If you hear "cook," "delicious," and "lunch," the topic is definitely Food.
Practice Activity: Identify the Topic
Listen to the 3 dialogues in the audio. Choose the correct main point.
-
Dialogue 1:
A) Working in an office
B) Playing guitar (Hobbies) -
Dialogue 2:
A) Making breakfast (Daily Routine)
B) Going to the cinema -
Dialogue 3:
A) Trying a new restaurant (Food)
B) Buying clothes

Listen to a 1-minute YouTube video in English about "Morning Routine." Don't write every word. Just write down 3 main actions the person does (e.g., wake up, coffee, run).
