2. Grammar: Reported Speech
When we report what someone else said, we often have to "backshift" the tenses. This means moving the tense one step back in the past. We also need to change pronouns, time expressions, and place words to fit the new perspective of the speaker.
| Direct Speech (The exact words) | Reported Speech (Backshifted) |
|---|---|
| Present Simple: "I love the lake." | Past Simple: He said that he loved the lake. |
| Present Continuous: "She is carving wood." | Past Continuous: They stated that she was carving wood. |
| Past Simple / Present Perfect: "I read the article." | Past Perfect: She mentioned that she had read the article. |
| Will / Can: "It will change." | Would / Could: He argued that it would change. |
| Questions: "Did you write this?" | If/Whether: She asked if I had written that. |

He asked if I a review .
3. Reading: The Article at Yeak Laom
"Have you read this piece yet, Tola?" Ravy asked, her brow furrowed. "The journalist claimed that our artistic traditions were completely fading away."
Tola adjusted his ranger cap and sighed. "I read it yesterday. The author stated that modernization had destroyed the soul of our province. But I think they completely missed the underlying theme of our daily lives here."
Ravy nodded in agreement. "Exactly. When I was interviewed, I told the journalist that our culture was evolving, not disappearing. I explained that I was teaching the younger generation our traditional carving methods. Yet, in his narrative arc, he painted us only as victims."
"It’s a classic example of flawed critique," Tola observed. "He used the lake as a metaphor for isolation, arguing that we were cut off from the modern world. But his portrayal was heavily biased. He exaggerated the negative aspects to make his story more dramatic."
"There is so much ambiguity in his writing, too," Ravy added, pointing to a specific paragraph. "Look here. He wrote that the forest 'whispered of forgotten times.' While the symbolism is poetic, it ignores the fact that we are actively protecting these forests right now. He quoted me out of context. He reported that I had said the old ways were dead. What I actually said was that the old ways had transformed into something new."
Tola smiled, understanding her frustration. "It all comes down to perspective. The writer wanted a tragic story, so he ignored the nuance of our reality. When I spoke to him, I mentioned that the community was thriving through sustainable eco-tourism. He didn't even include that!"
Ravy folded the magazine and placed it on the bench. "I suppose any critique of a culture from an outsider will have blind spots. We just have to ensure our own voices are heard louder."
"I agree," Tola said, looking out over the calm waters. "Maybe you should write a response. You could state that while we appreciated his visit, his conclusions were fundamentally flawed."
Ravy’s eyes lit up. "That’s a brilliant idea. I will write an essay explaining that our heritage is alive and well, hidden in the very details he failed to see."

6. Writing: A Formal Review Response
Look at the model text. Notice how the writer uses Reported Speech and vocabulary to critique an article professionally.
I recently read the article regarding the artisan community in Ratanakiri. The author stated that our artistic culture was rapidly declining. He argued that modernization had ruined our traditions. However, I must offer a critique of this perspective. The author completely missed the nuance of our situation. When I spoke to him, I explained that we were adapting our skills, not losing them. His portrayal of us as helpless victims is an exaggeration.
Sincerely,
Ravy
