Welcome to Modals! When my students work in cafes or guide tours in Siem Reap and Battambang, they often need to give recommendations or politely ask tourists what they want. Today, we are learning "should" for giving helpful advice and "would like" for expressing polite desires.
សូមស្វាគមន៍! នៅពេលដែលសិស្សរបស់ខ្ញុំធ្វើការនៅហាងកាហ្វេ ឬធ្វើជាមគ្គុទ្ទេសក៍ទេសចរណ៍ ពួកគេតែងតែត្រូវផ្តល់ការណែនាំ ឬសួរភ្ញៀវដោយគួរសម។ ថ្ងៃនេះ យើងនឹងរៀនប្រើ "should" ដើម្បីផ្តល់ដំបូន្មាន និង "would like" ដើម្បីបង្ហាញពីការចង់បានដោយគួរសម។
warning Common Mistake
After the word "should", always use the base verb. Never add "to". (Say: "You should visit," NOT "You should to visit"). However, when using "would like" with an action, you MUST use "to". (Say: "I would like to eat," NOT "I would like eat").
បន្ទាប់ពីពាក្យ "should" ត្រូវប្រើកិរិយាសព្ទដើមជានិច្ច កុំបន្ថែម "to" ពីមុខកិរិយាសព្ទ។ ប៉ុន្តែនៅពេលប្រើ "would like" ជាមួយសកម្មភាព អ្នកត្រូវតែប្រើ "to" (ឧទាហរណ៍៖ I would like to eat)។

Giving Advice
Should
Used to say that something is a good idea or the right thing to do.
គួរតែ - ប្រើដើម្បីនិយាយថាអ្វីមួយជាគំនិតល្អ ឬជារឿងត្រឹមត្រូវដែលត្រូវធ្វើ។
Example: You should try the bamboo train at sunset.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ អ្នកគួរតែសាកល្បងជិះរថភ្លើងឫស្សីនៅពេលថ្ងៃលិច។
Negative Advice
Shouldn't
Short for "should not". Used to warn someone that an action is a bad idea.
មិនគួរ - ប្រើដើម្បីព្រមាននរណាម្នាក់ថាសកម្មភាពណាមួយមិនល្អ។
Example: You shouldn't forget your sunscreen when visiting the temples.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ អ្នកមិនគួរភ្លេចឡេការពារកម្តៅថ្ងៃរបស់អ្នកទេនៅពេលទៅទស្សនាប្រាសាទ។
Asking Advice
Should I...?
Used to ask someone for their recommendation or opinion.
តើខ្ញុំគួរតែ...ទេ? - ប្រើដើម្បីសុំការណែនាំ ឬយោបល់ពីនរណាម្នាក់។
Example: Should I tip the tuk-tuk driver after the tour?
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ តើខ្ញុំគួរតែឱ្យលុយធីបទៅអ្នកបើកម៉ូតូកង់បីទេបន្ទាប់ពីបញ្ចប់ការដើរកម្សាន្ត?
Polite Desire
Would like
A polite and formal way to say "I want". Often used in restaurants or hotels.
ចង់ / ចង់បាន (គួរសម) - វិធីគួរសមដើម្បីនិយាយថា "ខ្ញុំចង់បាន"។ ជារឿយៗប្រើនៅក្នុងភោជនីយដ្ឋាន ឬសណ្ឋាគារ។
Example: I would like a glass of iced coffee, please.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ខ្ញុំចង់បានកាហ្វេទឹកកកមួយកែវ។
Offering
Would you like...?
Used to politely offer something to someone.
តើអ្នកចង់...ទេ? - ប្រើដើម្បីផ្តល់អ្វីមួយដល់នរណាម្នាក់ដោយគួរសម។
Example: Would you like to see the dinner menu?
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ តើអ្នកចង់មើលម៉ឺនុយអាហារពេលល្ងាចទេ?
Polite Refusal
Wouldn't like
A polite way to say "I don't want" or to gently refuse something.
មិនចង់ (គួរសម) - វិធីគួរសមដើម្បីនិយាយថា "ខ្ញុំមិនចង់បាន" ឬបដិសេធអ្វីមួយដោយទន់ភ្លន់។
Example: I wouldn't like to walk to the market; it is too hot today.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ខ្ញុំមិនចង់ដើរទៅផ្សារទេ វាពិតជាក្តៅណាស់ថ្ងៃនេះ។
