Vocabulary: Sleep, Dreams & Bedtime

Welcome! When English learners first start writing or speaking, they often get confused about where to put words. The golden rule of English sentences is S-V-O (Subject + Verb + Object).

The Subject is who does the action, the Verb is the action itself, and the Object is what receives the action. Scroll down to look at the basic building blocks of a perfect statement.

warning Common Mistake

In casual conversation in some languages, people drop the subject if everyone knows who they are talking about. In English, every normal statement MUST have a subject. You cannot just say "Eat rice." You must say "I eat rice."

Lesson Summary & Review

Let's review the key concepts covered in the interactive module above to ensure you are ready to build perfect English sentences.

The S-V-O Rule

English sentences almost always follow a strict order:

  • Subject (S): The person or thing doing the action. (e.g., The farmer)
  • Verb (V): The action word. (e.g., grows)
  • Object (O): The person or thing receiving the action. (e.g., rice)

Combined: The farmer grows rice.

Why is this important?

If you mix up the order, the sentence changes its meaning entirely! For example, "The dog bit the man" is very different from "The man bit the dog." Always remember: Who did it? What did they do? Who or what did they do it to?
