Welcome to the Reading Lab! In this interactive module, we are practicing an essential real-world skill: Functional Scanning.
Instead of reading every single word, we will train your eyes to quickly extract specific information from everyday documents like ID cards, library passes, and event tickets. Scroll down to review the vocabulary, analyze the artifacts, and test your scanning speed!
Functional Scanning
Learn how to find specific information quickly on everyday items like ID cards and tickets.
Scanning is a crucial skill for navigating everyday life efficiently.
psychology Strategy: How to Scan
When you read a story, you read every single word from beginning to end. But when you look at a bus schedule, an ID card, or a movie ticket, you don't read like that!
Instead, you use a skill called scanning. Your eyes jump around the document looking for specific shapes, numbers, or keywords. For example, if you want to know when your ID expires, you don't read your name or address; your eyes immediately jump to words like VALID or EXP to find the date.

Lesson Summary & Review
Let's review the key concepts covered in the interactive module above.
Reading Strategy: Scanning
When dealing with everyday functional texts (like forms, bills, tickets, or schedules), you should almost never read linearly.
Identify the Goal: Before you look at the paper, know exactly what you are looking for (e.g., "I need the time").
Look for Formatting: Use bold text, capital letters, and numbers to guide your eyes quickly to the answer.
