Writing: B2 Lesson 7: The 'For and Against' (Balanced) Essay.

Writing B2
⚖️

Balance & Reason

A "For and Against" essay requires you to discuss a topic objectively from both sides before giving your own opinion at the end.

🏛️

The Structure 🏛️

Paragraph 1: Introduction Introduce the topic neutrally. State that there are differing views.
Paragraph 2: Arguments FOR Present the main advantages with supporting examples.
Paragraph 3: Arguments AGAINST Present the main drawbacks or opposing views.
Paragraph 4: Conclusion Summarize the main points and FINALLY give your own opinion.

The Opinion Trap! ⚠️

Hold your thoughts!

In Action ✍️

Topic: Social Media
On the one hand, social media connects us globally. Furthermore, it helps small businesses grow.

On the other hand, it can cause anxiety. Moreover, fake news spreads quickly.

In conclusion, while there are clear drawbacks, I believe the benefits outweigh the negatives if used responsibly.

Teacher, what if I completely agree with the topic? Do I still have to write the 'Against' paragraph?

Hi Sokha! YES. That is exactly what makes it a "Balanced Essay". Even if you 100% agree, you must show the examiner that you understand the other side's perspective. Write objectively in paragraph 3, and then smash their arguments with your opinion in the conclusion! 📝💪
