Lesson 6: Leave-taking

Core & Everyday Vocabulary (A1)

Every conversation has a beginning and an end. You know how to say "hello," and now it's time to learn how to say "goodbye" in different ways. The words we use to end a conversation politely are called "leave-takings."

Word Bank

  • Goodbye / Bye (phrase) | លាហើយ
The most common words for leaving. 'Bye' is more casual.
    Example: "Goodbye, see you tomorrow!"
  • See you later (phrase) | ជួបគ្នាពេលក្រោយ
A friendly way to say you will meet again soon.
Example: "I have to go now. See you later!"
  • Take care (phrase) | រក្សាសុខភាពផង
A warm, kind way to say goodbye.
Example: "It was nice to see you. Take care."
  • Have a good day (phrase) | សូមអោយមានថ្ងៃល្អ
A polite wish for someone when you leave.
Example: "Bye, Bora! Have a good day!"
  • You too (phrase) | អ្នកក៏ដូចគ្នា
A simple, polite reply to a good wish.
Example: "A: Have a good day! B: Thanks, you too!"

Usage Note: A Quick Reminder

Remember from Lesson 4: "Good night" is only a leave-taking phrase. You say it when you leave a place late at night, or when someone is going to bed. You never use it to say 'hello'.
