What is a Metaphor?

អ្វីទៅជាពាក្យប្រៀបធៀប (Metaphor)?

A metaphor compares two different things by saying one thing IS the other.

(ការប្រៀបធៀបវត្ថុពីរដោយផ្ទាល់ ថាវត្ថុមួយ "គឺជា" វត្ថុមួយទៀត ដើម្បីបញ្ជាក់ន័យ។)

Time is money.

Meaning: Time is valuable; don't waste it.

អត្ថន័យ: ពេលវេលាគឺជាមាសប្រាក់។

"We need to finish this project fast. Remember, time is money."

A heart of stone.

Meaning: Unfeeling or cruel.

អត្ថន័យ: បេះដូងថ្ម / ចិត្តដាច់ / គ្មានក្តីមេត្តា។

"He has a heart of stone; he didn't even cry during the sad movie."

Literal: ដុតប្រេងកាតពេលកណ្តាលអធ្រាត្រ

Meaning: To work or study late into the night.

អត្ថន័យ: ខិតខំធ្វើការឬរៀនរហូតដល់យប់ជ្រៅ។

"I have a big exam tomorrow, so I'll be burning the midnight oil tonight."

cut corners

Literal: កាត់ជ្រុង

Meaning: To do something poorly or cheaply to save time/money.

អត្ថន័យ: ធ្វើការងារលំៗដើម្បីចំណេញពេល ឬលុយ។

"If you cut corners on building the house, it will collapse."

Literal: វាយជុំវិញគុម្ពព្រៃ

Meaning: To avoid talking about the main topic.

អត្ថន័យ: និយាយវិលវល់មិនចូលសាច់រឿង / និយាយបញ្ឆិតបញ្ឆៀង។

"Stop beating around the bush and tell me the bad news."

a blessing in disguise

Literal: ពរជ័យដែលបន្លំខ្លួន

Meaning: A good thing that seemed bad at first.

អត្ថន័យ: រឿងអាក្រក់ដែលក្លាយជារឿងល្អនៅពេលក្រោយ / សំណាងក្នុងគ្រោះ។

"Losing that job was a blessing in disguise because I found a better one."

bite off more than you can chew

Literal: ខាំធំជាងអ្វីដែលអ្នកអាចទំពារបាន

Meaning: To take on a task that is way too big.

អត្ថន័យ: ទទួលយកការងារលើសពីសមត្ថភាពដែលខ្លួនអាចធ្វើបាន។
