⚙️ Lesson 5: Past Continuous Tense
In this lesson, we move on to the Past Continuous1 tense. This tense is like a movie camera for the past. We use it to describe actions that were in progress or happening at a specific time. It helps to paint a picture of the background2 and tell a story.
The Structure: Was/Were + Verb-ing
The structure is straightforward. We use the past tense of the verb 'to be' (was/were) and add '-ing' to the main verb.
Structure: Subject + was/were + Verb-ing
- Positive: I/He/She/It was working. │ You/We/They were listening.
- Negative: He wasn't sleeping. │ They weren't playing.
- Question: Was she reading? │ Were you waiting?
Use 1: Interrupted Longer Actions
This is the most common use of the Past Continuous. It describes a longer background action that was interrupted3 by a shorter, completed action (in the Past Simple). We use 'when' and 'while' to connect them.
- Longer Action → Past Continuous
- Shorter, Interrupting Action → Past Simple
Example 1: I was walking home when it suddenly started to rain.
Example 2: While my friend was exploring the art galleries in Battambang, she found a beautiful painting.
Use 2: Setting the Scene in a Narrative
Writers and storytellers love the Past Continuous. It's perfect for starting a narrative4 or describing a scene5 by explaining what was happening all at the same time.
Example Scene: "The sun was setting over the rice fields outside Battambang. A warm breeze was blowing gently. Farmers were finishing their work for the day, and children were laughing and playing near the road. Everything was feeling calm and peaceful."
