In our last lesson, we learned that Adverbs of Frequency tell us "how often" something happens. Today, we will learn about Adverbs of Manner1.

Adverbs of Manner tell us how or in what way an action is done. Many of them are formed2 by adding '-ly' to an adjective.

How to Form Adverbs of Manner

The spelling3 rules are quite simple.

  • Most Adjectives → Add '-ly':
    quick → quickly | slow → slowly | beautiful → beautifully
  • Adjective ends in -y → Change 'y' to '-ily':
    happy → happily | easy → easily
  • Adjective ends in -le → Change 'e' to 'y':
    simple → simply | gentle → gently

Irregular4 Adverbs

Some adverbs do not follow the rules. You must remember these special cases!

Word Order: Where to Place the Adverb

The most common placement5 for an adverb of manner is after the verb or after the object.

Subject + Verb + [Object] + Adverb.

  • He rides his bicycle carefully.
  • The children are playing happily on the beach.
  • Please speak slowly.
