✨ Lesson 8: Adverbs of Frequency & Placement

Today we will learn about Adverbs of Frequency1. These are words that tell us how often something happens.

Here are the most common adverbs of frequency, from most often (100%) to least often (0%).

  • always (100%)
  • usually (~80%)
  • often (~60%)
  • sometimes (~40%)
  • rarely2 / seldom3 (~10%)
  • never (0%)

The Rules of Placement4 (Word Order)

The most important rule for these adverbs is knowing where to put them in a sentence.

Rule 1: With the verb 'be' (am, is, are)
The adverb comes AFTER the verb 'be'.

Subject + [am/is/are] + ADVERB

  • I am never late for class.
  • The weather in Kampot is usually hot.
  • They are often tired after work.

Rule 2: With all other Action Verbs
The adverb comes BEFORE the action verb.

Subject + ADVERB + [Action Verb]

  • She always drinks coffee in the morning.
  • We rarely eat pizza.
  • He sometimes plays football with his friends.

Flexible Friend: 'Sometimes'
The word 'sometimes' is special. It can go at the beginning, middle, or end of a sentence for emphasis5.

  • Sometimes I walk to work. (Beginning)
  • I sometimes walk to work. (Middle - normal position)
  • I walk to work sometimes. (End)
