B1 Lesson 1: Identifying Main Ideas in a Short, Simple Text

Welcome to a new series on important academic skills. Before you can summarize1 or paraphrase2 a text, you must understand its most important point. Today, we will learn how to identify3 the main idea4 of a paragraph.

Main Idea vs. Supporting Details

Think of a paragraph as a house. The Main Idea is the roof—it covers the entire topic. The Supporting Details5 are the pillars and walls—they hold up the roof and give it structure.

Main Idea (The Roof): Visiting Angkor Wat is a fascinating experience.

Supporting Details (The Pillars):

  • The temples are enormous and ancient.
  • You can see beautiful, detailed carvings on the walls.
  • Watching the sunrise over the main temple is an unforgettable sight.

How to Find the Main Idea

In academic writing, the main idea of a paragraph is often stated clearly in a topic sentence, which is usually the first sentence.

Example Paragraph

The night market in Siem Reap is an exciting place for tourists to visit. First, there are hundreds of stalls selling a wide variety of souvenirs, such as t-shirts, statues, and paintings. In addition, visitors can enjoy delicious and cheap local street food, like grilled skewers and fruit shakes. Finally, it is a great place to just walk around and enjoy the lively, energetic atmosphere.

Analysis:

  • The first sentence gives us the main idea: the night market is exciting for tourists.
  • All the other sentences are supporting details that explain WHY it is exciting (souvenirs, food, atmosphere).

✍️ Main Idea Finder's Checklist

When you read a paragraph, ask yourself:

  • ✔️ Have I looked closely at the first sentence? Does it state the overall topic?
  • ✔️ What is the one single point the author wants me to know?
  • ✔️ Do all the other sentences (the details) support and explain this one point?

Text:

(Paragraph 1) The Tonlé Sap Lake is one of the most important geographical features in Cambodia. During the rainy season, the flow of the Mekong River reverses, and the lake can become five times larger than it is in the dry season.

(Paragraph 2) The lake is also incredibly important to the Cambodian people and economy. It provides more than 60% of the country's fish protein, supporting millions of people.
