Hello Learners! 👋
Today, we are going to learn about adjectives! Adjectives are describing words. They make our sentences more interesting and give more information.
In this lesson, you will learn:
- What adjectives are.
- Where to put adjectives in a sentence.
- How to write simple sentences using adjectives to describe things like color and size.
What are Adjectives?
Adjectives are words that describe nouns (people, animals, places, or things). They tell us more about the noun, like:
- What kind? (e.g., big, small, happy, sad, red, blue)
- How many? (e.g., one, two, many) - We will focus more on "what kind" today.
Where do Adjectives Go?
Adjectives often go in two main places:
- Before the noun they describe:
- a red car
- a happy girl
- the tall tree
- After a "be" verb (like is, am, are, was, were):
- The car is red.
- The girl is happy.
- The tree was tall.
Sometimes, you can use both! For example: The big dog is brown.
Remember our punctuation: Capital letter at the start, full stop (.) at the end!
Activity 1: Find the Describing Word (Adjective)
Read the sentence. Which word is the adjective describing the highlighted noun?
Activity 2: Add an Adjective
Complete the sentence by choosing the best adjective from the list to describe the noun.
Activity 3: Write a Descriptive Sentence
Use the noun, adjective, and verb (like "is" or "has") to write a full sentence. Remember capital letters and full stops!
Example Frame: The [adjective] [noun] is [another adjective/color]. OR I see a [adjective] [noun].
✨ Tips for Using Adjectives ✨
- Think "What kind?": Adjectives often answer this question about a noun. (e.g., What kind of car? A red car.)
- Colors are Adjectives: Words like red, blue, green, yellow are common adjectives.
- Sizes are Adjectives: Words like big, small, tall, short are also adjectives.
- Feelings can be Adjectives: Words like happy, sad, tired can describe people (or sometimes animals!).
- Practice with Objects: Look around you. Try to describe things using an adjective and a noun (e.g., "a white wall", "a soft chair").
