Hello Learners! 👋

Today, we will learn to write short labels or captions for pictures. This means writing a few words to describe what we see in a picture.

In this lesson, you will:

  • Understand what a label for a picture is.
  • Learn to use words like "a", "an", colors, and names of things to make labels.
  • Practice writing short labels for different pictures.

What is a Picture Label?

A picture label is a short group of words that tells us something about a picture. It helps us understand what we are looking at.

For simple labels, we often use:

  • An article (like "a" or "an")
  • An adjective (a describing word, like a color or size - e.g., "red", "big") - This is optional for very simple labels.
  • A noun (the name of a person, place, or thing - e.g., "car", "dog", "apple")

Examples:

If you see a picture of a red car, you could write:

a red car

If you see a picture of a big dog, you could write:

a big dog

Sometimes, the label can be very simple:

an apple

(We use "an" before words that start with a vowel sound like a, e, i, o, u.)

Remember: For these short labels, we don't usually use a capital letter at the start or a full stop at the end, unless your teacher tells you to write a full sentence.

Activity 1: Choose the Best Label

Look at the picture (imagine it!). Choose the best label from the buttons.

Activity 2: Write Your Own Label

Look at the picture (imagine it!). Type a short label to describe it. Use words like "a", "an", and colors if you can.

✨ Tips for Writing Picture Labels ✨

  • Look Carefully: What is the main thing in the picture?
  • Think of Words: What is it called (noun)? Can you describe its color or size (adjective)?
  • Use "a" or "an": If it's one thing, use "a" (e.g., a cat, a blue car) or "an" (e.g., an apple, an orange elephant).
  • Keep it Short: For A1, labels are usually just a few words.
  • Check Spelling: Try to spell the words correctly.
