Hello Learners! 👋
Today, we will learn about a very important punctuation mark: the full stop. In American English, it's often called a period. It looks like this: .
In this lesson, you will learn:
- What a full stop (period) is.
- When to use a full stop at the end of a sentence.
- To practice adding full stops to sentences.
What is a Full Stop (Period)?
A full stop . is a small dot that we use in writing.
Main Rule: We use a full stop at the end of a sentence that tells something (a statement).
It tells the reader that the idea or thought is finished.
Examples:
- The cat is sleeping.
- My name is Dara.
- I like apples.
Incorrect:
- The dog is big (No full stop here is wrong for a statement)
Activity 1: Does it End Correctly?
Look at the sentences. Does the sentence end correctly with a full stop? Choose "Yes" or "No".
Activity 2: Add the Full Stop!
These sentences are missing a full stop at the end. Type the sentence correctly in the box, adding the full stop.
Activity 3: Fix the Sentence! (Capitals & Full Stops)
Let's use what you learned before! These sentences need a capital letter at the start AND a full stop at the end. Rewrite them correctly.
✨ Tips for Using Full Stops ✨
- Think "Stop!": A full stop is like a stop sign for your sentence. It means the thought is complete.
- One Thought, One Sentence: Usually, one main idea or piece of information makes one sentence.
- Read Aloud: When you read, you naturally pause at a full stop. When you write, think about where those pauses should be.
- Check Your Writing: Always look at the end of your sentences. Do they have a full stop?
