Lesson 2: Basic Word Stress Welcome to your pronunciation training layout! I am your instructor, Teacher Sopheak. In English, we do not say every part of a word with the same volume. One part is always stronger, louder, and higher in pitch. Core Word Stress Guidelines: Nouns & Adjectives: Generally stressed on the first syllable. Examples: WATER, APPLE, TEACHER. Verbs & Prepositions: Generally stressed on the second syllable. Examples: be-GIN, for-GET, re-LAX. The -tion Suffix Rule: Always stress the syllable immediately preceding the -tion ending.
