record_voice_over Sounding Friendly and Polite

Your intonation (the music of your voice) shows your feelings. To sound friendly, your voice should go up and down naturally. A flat, monotone voice can sound bored or unfriendly.

  • When you ask "How are you today? ↗", let your voice go up at the end to show you are really interested.
  • When you say "Have a good day! ↘", let your voice go down at the end. It sounds warm and sincere.

lightbulb The Flow of a Conversation

Even a short conversation has a clear flow. Look at our model dialogue:

1. The Opening (Start):

Vanna and Srey say "Good morning" and ask "How are you?". This is the polite way to begin.

2. The Middle (Small Talk):

Srey talks about the weather ("It's a sunny day!"). This is called "small talk". It's a short, simple topic to be friendly before you end the conversation.

3. The Closing (End):

Vanna signals the end by saying "I have to go to work now." This is a polite reason to leave. Then they say nice things ("It was nice to see you," "Have a good day!") before finally saying goodbye.

task Your Communication Mission

This week in Siem Reap, your mission is to have one complete English conversation.

With a friend or classmate, practice the full flow: Start with a greeting, ask how they are, make one small talk comment (e.g., "The classroom is cold today!"), and then end the conversation politely using phrases like "It was nice to see you" and "Have a good day."
