Reading: Reading for Detail (Very Simple Sentences)
Lesson 2: Matching Simple Sentences to Pictures
Before You Start
In our last lesson, we learned to read for detail by asking questions. Today, we will use that skill for a fun activity: matching1 sentences to pictures.
You must read the sentence very carefully and find the one picture that shows all the key details2.
How to Match a Sentence to a Picture
- Read the sentence slowly. Understand all the words.
- Find the key details. Who is it? What are they doing? What color is it?
- Look at all the pictures. Compare each picture to the details from the sentence.
- Choose the one picture that matches ALL the details.
Practice Example 1
Read the sentence and look at the three pictures. Which picture is the correct match?
"A man is drinking coffee by the window."
A: A woman is drinking coffee.
B: A man is drinking coffee.
C: A man is eating noodles.
Answer: Picture B is the correct match.
Picture A is wrong because it is a woman, not a man. Picture C is wrong because the man is eating, not drinking coffee. Picture B has all the correct details: a man, and he is drinking coffee.
