Technical Instructions

Technical or academic texts use precise language to explain complex processes. Missing a step means missing the goal!

Technical processes must follow a strict order.
Initially, the user must configure the settings.
Following this, the system will reboot.
Subsequently, a confirmation email is generated.

Provided that the data is correct, the process continues.
In the event of an error, press restart.
Unless authorized, do not proceed.

These phrases mean the author is about to define a difficult concept.
It utilizes photosynthesis, namely, converting light into energy.
The device requires calibration, that is to say, it needs adjusting.
warning The Skimming Trap!

Do not skim conditional statements!

"Press the red button unless the light is flashing."
Skimmer thinks: "Press the red button when flashing." ❌ (DANGER)
"Press the red button unless the light is flashing."
Careful reader knows: "If flashing = DO NOT PRESS." ✅ (SAFE)

Teacher Kanha, is "provided that" the exact same as "if"?

Excellent question! Yes, it operates exactly like "if", but it is much more formal. It sets a strict condition that MUST be met. account_tree

Why do academic writers use "namely"? Why not just use "like" or "for example"?

Because "namely" is very precise! "For example" means there are other options. "Namely" means "I am talking exactly and specifically about THIS." It removes all doubt! manage_search
