Reading: Reading Fluency & Strategies (Strategic Reading)
B2 Lesson 4: Synthesizing Information from Different Parts of a Text or Multiple Texts
Building a Bigger Picture
The highest level of reading comprehension is not just understanding one text, but being able to combine information from multiple sources to create a new, more complete understanding. This skill is called synthesizing1.
It’s like being a detective who interviews two different witnesses. Each witness tells their part of the story. By combining their different perspectives2, you get a much better idea of what really happened.
The Synthesis Strategy
- Understand Each Source: Read each text individually to understand its main idea and key points.
- Find the Common Topic: What is the one main subject that both texts are discussing?
- Identify Agreements & Disagreements: Where do the texts agree? Where do they present different information or have different opinions?
- Form a New, Synthesized Understanding: Combine the information from all sources to create a more nuanced3 and complete picture of the topic.
Practice: Synthesizing Two Texts on Kampot Tourism
Read the two short articles below. Both are about the same topic, but they have a different focus.
Text 1: Tourism Fuels Economic Growth in Kampot
The significant increase in tourism over the past decade has been a major driver of economic growth for Kampot province. The construction of new hotels, guesthouses, and restaurants has created thousands of jobs for local residents. Furthermore, the influx of visitors has created a thriving market for local products, from world-renowned pepper to handmade crafts. This economic activity provides vital income for families and helps to fund public services.
Text 2: Is Kampot's Tourism Growth Sustainable?
While the economic benefits of tourism are often celebrated, it is crucial to consider the social and environmental costs. The rapid construction of new buildings has put a severe strain on public infrastructure, such as waste management and electricity grids. Moreover, some analysts argue that many tourism jobs are low-wage and seasonal, offering little long-term career security. There is a growing concern that if this development is not managed carefully, it could damage the very environment that attracts tourists in the first place.
Guided Synthesis
- Common Topic: Both texts are about the impact of tourism growth in Kampot.
- Point of Agreement: Both texts acknowledge that tourism is growing significantly.
- Different Perspectives:
→ Text 1 focuses exclusively on the positive economic benefits (jobs, income, markets).
→ Text 2 focuses on the negative social and environmental consequences (infrastructure strain, low-wage jobs, environmental risk). - Synthesized Understanding: By combining both texts, we get a holistic view4. A good synthesis would be:
"While the growth of tourism in Kampot provides important economic benefits like jobs and a market for local goods, it also presents serious challenges, including strain on infrastructure, potential environmental damage, and concerns about the quality of employment. Therefore, sustainable management is required to balance the pros and cons."
Your Turn! Create a Synthesis.

- Read both articles carefully.
- In your notebook, write down one key fact or idea that both sources agree on.
- Write down one fact, detail, or opinion that is different between the two sources.
