Stop and Ask!

Punctuation tells us how to read a sentence. A Full Stop means you should stop. A Question Mark means you are asking something!

សញ្ញាខណ្ឌប្រាប់យើងពីរបៀបអានប្រយោគ។ ចំណុច (.) មានន័យថាអ្នកត្រូវឈប់។ សញ្ញាសួរ (?) មានន័យថាអ្នកកំពុងសួរនរណាម្នាក់!

The Full Stop (.)

សញ្ញាចំណុច (បញ្ចប់ប្រយោគធម្មតា)

I like apples. Telling a fact. ខ្ញុំចូលចិត្តផ្លែប៉ោម។

She is my friend. Telling a fact. នាងគឺជាមិត្តរបស់ខ្ញុំ។

The cat is sleeping. Describing something. ឆ្មាកំពុងដេក។

We live in Cambodia. Telling a fact. ពួកយើងរស់នៅប្រទេសកម្ពុជា។

The Question Mark (?)

សញ្ញាសួរ (នៅចុងបញ្ចប់សំណួរ)

Do you like apples? Asking for information. តើអ្នកចូលចិត្តផ្លែប៉ោមទេ?

Is she your friend? Asking for information. តើនាងគឺជាមិត្តរបស់អ្នកឬ?

What is your name? Asking for information. តើអ្នកឈ្មោះអ្វី?

Where do you live? Asking for information. តើអ្នករស់នៅឯណា?

ការប្តូរកម្រិតសំឡេងពេលអាន

Voice goes DOWN at the end. For a Full Stop (.) សំឡេងត្រូវទម្លាក់ចុះនៅចុងបញ្ចប់នៃប្រយោគដែលមានចំណុច។

Voice goes UP at the end. For a Question Mark (?) សំឡេងត្រូវលើកឡើងខ្ពស់នៅចុងបញ្ចប់នៃប្រយោគដែលមានសញ្ញាសួរ។

Stop and take a quick breath. For a Full Stop (.) ឈប់អានមួយភ្លែត ហើយដកដង្ហើមពេលឃើញចំណុច។

Do not put a question mark if you are not asking a real question!

"I do not know what time it is?"

No, you only need one mark at the end of a sentence! If it is a question, just use the "?". If it is a normal statement, just use the ".". do_not_disturb

For questions that answer "Yes" or "No", your voice goes UP at the end. For questions asking for information (like What, Where, When), the voice actually goes DOWN at the end. We will practice that more later! record_voice_over
