Facts, examples, or reasons that give more information about the main idea.

What is a Main Idea? (The Umbrella ☂️)

Think of the Main Idea as a big umbrella. It's the one big idea that covers the entire paragraph. The Supporting Details are like raindrops (💧). They are the smaller facts, examples, and descriptions that fall *under* the umbrella.

A good summary is just the umbrella, not all the raindrops.

How to Find the Main Idea (3 Steps)

  1. Read the full paragraph for general understanding.
  2. Ask: "Who or what is this paragraph mostly about?" (This is the Topic).
  3. Ask: "What is the most important point the author wants to say about this topic?" (This is the Main Idea).

Many people are switching to reusable water bottles, and for good reason. First, they are much better for the environment. Plastic bottles create a huge amount of waste that pollutes our oceans and land. Second, using a reusable bottle saves money. Instead of buying bottled water every day, you can refill your bottle for free from a water filter. Finally, many reusable bottles are insulated, meaning they can keep your water cold (or your coffee hot) for many hours. This makes them more convenient than a simple plastic bottle.

Let's Analyze the Passage

  • 1. Topic (អ្វីអំពី?): Reusable water bottles.
  • 2. Main Idea (ចំណុចសំខាន់): Reusable water bottles have several major benefits.
  • 3. Supporting Details (ព័ត៌មានលម្អិត):
    • Detail 1: They are good for the environment (less waste).
    • Detail 2: They save money (free refills).
    • Detail 3: They are convenient (insulated).

Our One-Sentence Summary:

"Reusable water bottles are popular because they are environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and convenient."
