Hello Cambodian Learners!
Vowels (a, e, i, o, u) are tricky sometimes! You've learned their short sounds (like in cat, pen, big, top, sun). Today, we'll learn their "long" sounds. A long vowel sound often sounds like the name of the letter itself! For example, the long 'a' sound is like the 'a' in "cake." Knowing these will help you read even more English words you see in books or around town.
What are Long Vowel Sounds?
A long vowel sound is when the vowel says its name. For example:
- Long A sounds like the 'A' in "late" or "rain".
- Long E sounds like the 'E' in "me" or "see".
- Long I sounds like the 'I' in "hi" or "like".
- Long O sounds like the 'O' in "go" or "home".
- Long U sounds like the 'U' in "use" or "cute".
There are different ways to spell these long vowel sounds. Let's look at some common ones! Click on the cards below to hear the sound and an example word.
