Listening: Basic Auditory Perception & Discrimination A1 - Lesson 3: Identifying Numbers (0-100) Spoken Clearly

Listening to Numbers (0-100)

CEFR Level A1

Lesson Goals

In this lesson, you will learn to hear and correctly identify English numbers from 0 to 100, focusing on the tricky difference between numbers like 13 and 30.

Learning the Number Sounds

Welcome! Understanding spoken numbers is essential for shopping, telling time, and giving addresses. Let's start with the basics.

The Basics (0-12)

Listen to the audio and repeat these first numbers. Most of them have unique sounds.

0 (zero)
1 (one)
2 (two)
3 (three)
4 (four)
5 (five)
6 (six)
7 (seven)
8 (eight)
9 (nine)
10 (ten)
11 (eleven)
12 (twelve)

The Tricky Teens (13-19)

Listen carefully to this group. All these numbers end with a long, stressed "-teen" sound. The stress is at the END of the word. Example: thir-TEEN.

13 (thirteen)
14 (fourteen)
15 (fifteen)
16 (sixteen)
17 (seventeen)
18 (eighteen)
19 (nineteen)

The Tens (20, 30 ... 90)

These numbers are for groups of ten. They end with a short "-ty" sound. The stress is at the START of the word. Example: THIR-ty.

20 (twenty)
30 (thirty)
40 (forty)
50 (fifty)
60 (sixty)
70 (seventy)
80 (eighty)
90 (ninety)
Key Tip: "-teen" vs "-ty" Sounds

This is the most important part of the lesson! The difference is the stress. Listening for the stress will help you know if a price is $15 or $50.

  • -TEEN = Long sound, stress at the END. (Example: fif-TEEN)
  • -TY = Short sound, stress at the BEGINNING. (Example: FIF-ty)

Listen to the pairs in the audio: 13 vs 30, 14 vs 40, 15 vs 50.

Your Mission

Practice what you've learned with these two tasks.

  1. Listen for Numbers: When you walk around Siem Reap today, listen for numbers. Listen to prices in shops or numbers on signs. Write down any numbers you hear in English.
  2. Say the Prices: Read these prices out loud: $17, $70, $18, $80. Record your voice and listen. Is the stress correct? Can you hear the difference?
