Context Clues

Don't know a word? Don't panic! Use the words around it (the context) to guess its meaning like a detective.

1. Meaning Clues 💡

ពាក្យបញ្ជាក់ន័យក្នុងប្រយោគតែមួយ

"He was exhausted, completely tired after work."

គាត់មានអារម្មណ៍ exhausted គឺ ហត់នឿយខ្លាំង ក្រោយពេលធ្វើការ។

"The room was immaculate, not dirty at all."

បន្ទប់នោះ immaculate គឺ ស្អាតគ្មានធូលី សោះឡើយ។

2. Contrast Clues 🔄

ពាក្យផ្ទុយ (ស្តាប់ពាក្យ: but, unlike, however)

"Unlike her loud sister, she was timid."

ខុសពី បងស្រីដែលចូលចិត្តមាត់ក នាងបែរជា timid (អៀនខ្មាស) ទៅវិញ។

"The dog is usually calm, but today it's frantic."

ឆ្កែនេះធម្មតា ស្ងប់ស្ងាត់ទេ ប៉ុន្តែ ថ្ងៃនេះវា frantic (ឡូឡា/រពឹសខ្លាំង)។

3. Example Clues 🍎

ការលើកឧទាហរណ៍ (ស្តាប់ពាក្យ: like, such as)

"She used vibrant colors, like hot pink."

នាងប្រើពណ៌ vibrant ដូចជាពណ៌ផ្កាឈូកស្រស់។ (vibrant = ពណ៌ស្រស់ឆើតឆាយ)

"Buy some produce, such as apples and carrots."

ទិញ produce ខ្លះមក ដូចជាផ្លែប៉ោម និងការ៉ុត។ (produce = កសិផល/បន្លែផ្លែឈើ)

Great question, Sovan! Sometimes the clue isn't in the *same* sentence. Keep listening to the *next* sentence. The speaker will often explain what they mean right after! 🎯

It's normal to feel stressed! Remember this: *Even native speakers don't hear every single word.* Focus on the big picture (the general meaning). If you miss one word, let it go. Focus on the words you *do* understand! 🧘‍♂️
