Lesson 8: The Verb "to be" - 'am' (I am...)
Welcome to a new topic! We have learned about nouns and pronouns. Now, we will learn about verbs1. A verb is a word that shows an action or a state of being.
The most important verb in English is the verb 'to be'2. Today, we will learn its first and simplest form: am.
The Golden Rule for 'am'
The rule is very easy. The verb am is a special partner for the pronoun I. You will ONLY ever use 'am' with 'I'.

How to Use 'I am'
We use "I am" to say who we are, or to describe ourselves.
- To say your name: I am Vanna.
- To say your job: I am a tuk-tuk driver. I am a tour guide.
- To describe a feeling3: I am happy4. I am tired5 after work.
- To say your location6: I am in Siem Reap. I am at Pub Street.
- To say your nationality: I am Cambodian.
Short Form: The Contraction 'I'm'
In everyday speaking, English speakers often use a short form called a contraction7. This makes words faster and easier to say.
"I am" becomes "I'm". They mean the exact same thing.
