The Verb 'to be': Using "is"
We have learned to say "I am." Today, we will learn another very common form of the verb "to be": the word is. We use "is" when we talk about one other person, animal, or thing.
When the subject is singular (one person or thing), we use "is".
- He is a doctor.
- She is my sister.
- It is a sunny day.
- The cat is black.
In speaking, we often join words to make them shorter:
- He is ➔ He's
- She is ➔ She's
- It is ➔ It's
Example: "He's a doctor." means "He is a doctor."
