Phaly, who has spent the last decade working at a local elephant sanctuary, faces a physically and emotionally demanding routine. The sanctuary, which spans hundreds of hectares of protected forest, is a haven for elephants that have been rescued from illegal logging operations. For Phaly, the drive to wake up before dawn doesn't come from a high salary. Her motivation is purely intrinsic. "The elephants that arrive here are often traumatized," she explains. "Seeing an animal, whose spirit was once broken, finally learn to trust humans again is the most stimulating part of my job." Of course, her path is not without its setbacks. During the monsoon season, which turns the dirt roads into impassable mud, delivering food to the animals requires immense perseverance. Yet, Phaly and her team overcome these obstacles because they aspire to create a safer world for Cambodia’s wildlife.
A few kilometers away, Rith tends to his thriving coffee plantation. Rith, whose family has farmed in Mondulkiri for generations, grows a specialized blend of robusta and arabica beans. While Phaly is driven by animal welfare, Rith’s primary incentive is community economic development. The coffee beans that he harvests are sold to organic cafes in Phnom Penh and exported internationally. "My ambition is to put Mondulkiri coffee on the global map," Rith notes, meticulously pruning a coffee bush. However, farming is unpredictable. Last year, a severe drought, which damaged almost twenty percent of his crops, served as a massive setback. Instead of giving up, Rith implemented a new drip-irrigation system that conserves water. This level of dedication is what separates successful farmers from those who abandon the trade.
Both Phaly and Rith demonstrate that when you have a clear purpose, overcoming adversity becomes a natural part of the journey. The people who thrive in challenging environments are those who understand their own internal drive. Whether you are caring for majestic animals or cultivating the perfect coffee bean, success relies heavily on the perseverance that you bring to your daily tasks.
