Discursive Essay

Explore multiple sides of a complex issue objectively before reaching a reasoned conclusion.

The Structure 🏗️

A C1 Discursive Essay requires a balanced, logical flow. Do not pick a side immediately!

1. Introduction Hook the reader, provide background context, and state that the essay will explore both perspectives.
2. Body Paragraphs Present Arguments FOR in one paragraph, and Arguments AGAINST in the next. Be objective.
3. Conclusion Synthesize the points discussed and finally state your reasoned stance or opinion.

Objective Tone 🎭

At C1 level, avoid saying "I think" or "In my opinion" in the body paragraphs. Use impersonal structures.

Instead of: "I think that..." ❌ Use: "It is widely argued that..."
Instead of: "People say..." ❌ Use: "Proponents of this view maintain that..."
Instead of: "It is bad because..." ❌ Use: "Critics point out that..."

Transition Words 🔗

Smooth transitions are essential for demonstrating complex logical relationships between paragraphs.

Adding Similar Points Furthermore / Moreover (លើសពីនេះទៅទៀត)
Introducing Opposing Views Conversely / On the other hand / Nevertheless
Concluding & Synthesizing Ultimately / Taking everything into consideration
The "Opinion Essay" Trap!

Do not just argue ONE side!

If the prompt asks for a "Discursive Essay" (or "Discuss both views"), you will lose massive points if you only write about the side you agree with.
Opinion Essay: Pick a side immediately and attack the other side. ❌
Discursive Essay: Look calmly at BOTH sides first, then conclude logically. ✅

Hi Sokha! It is highly recommended to avoid it. A discursive essay is about analyzing the topic objectively first. Save your "I believe" or "In my view" strictly for the conclusion where you finally make your judgment! ⚖️

Usually, you need 2 to 4 body paragraphs. A classic structure is two paragraphs exploring the "pros" (advantages) and two exploring the "cons" (disadvantages) before moving to the conclusion. 📝

No, they are different! An Argumentative essay picks a side immediately in the introduction and defends it throughout. A Discursive essay looks at BOTH sides evenly first, and only reveals your final stance at the end. 🧐

Try to avoid starting sentences with "But" or "And" in C1 writing. Instead, elevate your language! Use "However," "Nevertheless," or "Conversely,". It sounds much more professional. 🎓
