Addition

Contrast

To show a difference or an opposite idea.
Result

A consequence or effect of an action.

How to Connect Your Ideas

Writing short sentences is good. Writing connected sentences is better! These three words are the most important connectors.

Use for: Addition (adding ideas)

Sentence 1: I like coffee.
Sentence 2: I like tea.

→ I like coffee and I like tea.
but
Use for: Contrast (showing a difference)

Sentence 1: He is rich.
Sentence 2: He is not happy.

→ He is rich, but he is not happy.
so
Use for: Result (showing a consequence)

Sentence 1: It was raining.
Sentence 2: I took an umbrella.

→ It was raining, so I took an umbrella.
