Lesson 1: A Wider Range of Prefixes

Word Formation & Morphology (B2)

Welcome to our B2 series on Word Formation! You already know how prefixes like 'un-' and 'im-' can create opposites. But prefixes can do much more! They can add concepts like time, number, or degree to a word. Understanding this morphology will allow you to decode hundreds of new words.

Key Vocabulary

  • Prefix (noun) | បុព្វបទ
A group of letters added to the beginning of a word to change its meaning.
  • Morphology (noun) | ការសិក្សាអំពីរចនាសម្ព័ន្ធពាក្យ
The study of the structure of words and how they are formed.
  • Nuance (noun) | ន័យបង្កប់
A subtle difference in or shade of meaning, expression, or sound.

Part 1: Advanced Prefixes (Modifying Meaning)

Prefixes are added to the beginning of a word and modify its core meaning.

Prefixes of Attitude & Relation
  • counter- (against, opposite): counter-argument, counter-intuitive, counter-productive

Suffixes are added to the end of a word, often changing its part of speech.

Noun-forming Suffixes
  • -ism (a belief system, ideology, or practice): capitalism, socialism, criticism, tourism
  • -ist (a person who does or believes something): artist, novelist, activist, psychologist
  • -ship (a state or condition): leadership, friendship, scholarship, partnership

  • -ize/-ise (to make or become): modernize, stabilize, prioritize, globalize

Discourse in Action: Decoding a Complex Text

Understanding affixes helps you decode dense, academic text. Look at this example:

"The minister's pro-industrialization speech was met with sharp criticism from environmental activists. They presented a strong counter-argument, stating that the government tends to over-simplify the complex, inter-dependent relationship between the economy and the ecosystem. They argued that we must prioritize sustainable development to avoid counter-productive results."

  • pro-industrialization: in favor of industrialization.
  • criticism: the practice of criticizing (-ism).
  • activists: people who are active in a cause (-ist).
  • counter-argument: an opposite argument.
  • over-simplify: to simplify too much.
  • inter-dependent: dependent between each other.
  • prioritize: to make something a priority (-ize).
  • counter-productive: creating the opposite of the desired result.

  2. Affix Hunt: Read the front page of an international news website (like BBC, Reuters, Al Jazeera). Find one word that uses a prefix or suffix from today's lesson. Write down the word and what you think it means based on its parts.
  3. Express Your Nuance: Do you think modern life is "hyper-connected"? Write one or two sentences explaining your opinion and what you mean by that term.
