Welcome to our new series on Thematic Vocabulary! Our first topic is one of the most important: family. Family members are the people closest to us. Let's learn the English words to talk about your family.

Word Bank: Immediate Family

• Family(noun) | គ្រួសារ
  A group of people who are related to each other.
• Mother(noun) | ម្ដាយ / ម៉ាក់
  A female parent. Also called 'mom'.
  Example: "My mother is a teacher."
• Father(noun) | ឪពុក / ប៉ា
  A male parent. Also called 'dad'.
  Example: "My father works at a hotel."
• Parents(noun) | ឪពុកម្ដាយ
  Your mother and father together.
  Example: "My parents are very kind."
• Sister(noun) | បងស្រី/ប្អូនស្រី
  A girl who has the same parents as you.
  Example: "I have one sister."
• Brother(noun) | បងប្រុស/ប្អូនប្រុស
  A boy who has the same parents as you.
  Example: "My brother likes to play football."
• Baby(noun) | ទារក
  A very young child.
  Example: "My sister has a new baby."

Usage Note: Showing Possession with 's

To show that something belongs to someone, we often add an apostrophe (') and an 's' to their name or title.

Correct Structure: Owner's + Noun

• My mother's name is Dara. (The name belongs to the mother.)
• My brother's shirt is blue. (The shirt belongs to the brother.)
• This is Sarah's book. (The book belongs to Sarah.)

In Conversation

Maria asks Srey to see a picture of her family.

Maria: Srey, do you have any photos of your family?

Srey: Yes, look. This is my mother and this is my father.

Maria: Your parents look very happy! Who is this?

Srey: That is my older brother. His name is Bora.

Maria: And this must be your sister!

Srey: Yes! She has a new baby. His name is David.

Maria: Aww, so cute! You have a lovely family.
