Vocabulary for Students

Welcome, students! Whether you are in a classroom or studying at home, you use many objects to help you learn. This lesson will teach you the English names for the common things you see and use every day.

Pen2 ប៊ិច A tool with ink that you use to write.

Notebook4 សៀវភៅសរសេរ A book with empty pages for writing notes.
Example: "Write this in your notebook."
Desk5 តុ A table where you sit to study.
Example: "My book is on my desk."
Chair6 កៅអី A seat for one person.
Example: "Please sit in your chair."
Teacher7 គ្រូ A person who teaches students.
Example: "The teacher is very kind."
Student8 សិស្ស A person who is learning.
Example: "You are a good student."

Usage Note: This and That

We use special words to point to objects.

  • Use "this" for an object that is close to you.
    Example: (holding your pen) "This is my pen."
  • Use "that" for an object that is far from you.
    Example: (pointing across the room) "That is the teacher's desk."

In the Classroom

A teacher is starting a new lesson.

Teacher: Good morning, class. Please take out your English book and a pen.

Srey: Excuse me, teacher? I don't have a pen.

Teacher: That's okay, Srey. You can use this pencil for today.

Srey: Thank you!

Teacher: Every student should now open their notebook. Place it on your desk and sit nicely in your chair.
