C1 - Lesson 8: Subject-Specific Terminology
The Language of Your Profession or Field of Study
While general academic vocabulary (like the AWL) is essential, true expertise in a field is demonstrated by mastering its specific terminology1. Every academic discipline2 and professional field has its own unique lexicon3. This lesson will showcase examples from several fields, not for you to memorize them all, but to provide a model for how you can explore and master the vocabulary that is most important to your own career and studies.
Example Lexicon 1: Business & Finance
- Leverage (v./n.): To use borrowed capital for an investment, or the amount of debt used to finance assets.
Ex: "The corporation plans to leverage its assets to fund the acquisition." - Asset Liquidity (n.p.): The ease with which an asset can be converted into cash without affecting its market price.
Ex: "While property is a valuable asset, its low asset liquidity can be a problem if you need cash quickly." - Shareholder Value (n.p.): The value delivered to the owners of a company.
Ex: "The CEO's primary duty is to increase shareholder value."
Example Lexicon 2: Environmental Science
- Biodiversity (n.): The variety of plant and animal life in a particular habitat.
Ex: "The construction of the dam could have a severe impact on the region's biodiversity." - Carbon Sequestration (n.p.): The long-term process of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide.
Ex: "Protecting Cambodia's large forests is crucial for global carbon sequestration." - Sustainable Yield (n.p.): The amount of a resource that can be taken without reducing the base stock.
Ex: "The fishery's catch has exceeded the sustainable yield for three years in a row."
Example Lexicon 3: Technology & Software
- Agile Methodology (n.p.): A project management approach based on iterative development.
Ex: "Our team has adopted an Agile methodology to respond more quickly to user feedback." - User Interface (UI) (n.): The visual part of a software application that a person interacts with.
Ex: "A clean and intuitive UI is essential for a positive user experience." - Backend (n.): The server-side of an application, responsible for data, logic, and infrastructure.
Ex: "While the app's design is simple, its backend is incredibly complex."
Discourse in Action: An Interdisciplinary Meeting
Imagine experts from different fields discussing a new tourism development project in Kampot.
Finance Expert: "To secure funding, we must demonstrate how this project will deliver long-term shareholder value. Our initial models show we can leverage the land assets effectively."
Environmental Expert: "I agree, but my concern is the local biodiversity. The construction must not damage the mangrove forests, which are vital for carbon sequestration. We must ensure the number of visitors does not exceed the area's sustainable yield."
Tech Consultant: "To manage visitor numbers, we can build a booking platform. Using an Agile methodology, we can develop an app with a simple UI for tourists, while the backend manages the data to prevent overbooking."

edit Your Mission
- Identify Your Lexicon: Choose your most important professional or academic field. In your notebook, write down three key specialized terms in English that someone outside your field might not understand.
- Define Your Term: For ONE of the terms you listed above, write a clear definition in simple English. Then, write a natural sentence using the term, as if you were explaining it to a colleague.
- The Expert Challenge: Find an English-language article, video, or podcast made for professionals in your domain. Your mission is to find ONE piece of subject-specific terminology that you are not 100% familiar with. Use the context and a dictionary to create a "deep learning" note for it.
