🔄 C2 Final Activity: Simulated Professional Communication Tasks
Welcome to your final C2 consolidation activity. At this stage of proficiency, the true test of mastery is not just knowing the rules, but applying them effectively in real-world situations. This lesson presents a series of simulated1 professional tasks that will challenge you to be a strategic2 communicator, adapting your style for different audiences and purposes.
The Scenario
Imagine you are the General Manager of a luxury boutique hotel in Siem Reap. Your hotel is highly rated, but a new construction project has started on the property next door, creating intermittent noise issues. You now face a complex communication challenge.
Your Tasks: A Multi-Faceted Response
You must handle this situation by writing three different pieces of professional communication3. Each requires a different tone, register, and set of grammatical tools.
Task 1: The Formal Complaint Response (Email)
A VIP guest has emailed you directly, complaining that construction noise disturbed their stay. They are very unhappy and have hinted at leaving a negative review.
Your Goal: Write a formal, apologetic, and professional email. You must validate their feelings, offer a concrete solution, and try to retain their loyalty.
Task 2: The Internal Team Memo
You need to inform your front desk and guest relations teams about the ongoing issue and provide clear instructions on how to handle future complaints.
Your Goal: Write a clear, concise, and authoritative internal memo4. Your purpose is to inform and instruct your staff.
Task 3: The Public Social Media Statement
A few negative comments about the noise have appeared on social media. You need to post a public statement on your hotel's Facebook page.
Your Goal: Write a short, public-facing statement. You must be transparent but reassuring, protecting the hotel's brand and managing public perception.
A C2 Communicator's Strategic Thinking
Before you write, think like a C2 professional. How should your language change for each task?
- For the Formal Email (Task 1): The tone must be extremely polite and respectful. Use a formal register ("sincere apologies," "inconvenience"). Using the passive voice to describe the problem ("we understand that some noise was experienced") can be a tactful5 way to state the issue without being defensive. Your proposed solution should use polite modals ("we would like to offer...").
- For the Internal Memo (Task 2): Clarity and directness are key. The tone is professional but instructional. Use the active voice and clear imperatives ("All staff must immediately...", "Please inform your supervisor..."). Conciseness is vital.
- For the Social Media Post (Task 3): This requires a balance of professionalism and warmth. Use hedging language to address the issue ("We are aware of some potential intermittent noise..."). Use boosting language to show confidence in your guest experience ("We remain fully committed to providing a peaceful and luxurious stay...").
🧠 Strategic Planning
Before you write, answer these strategic questions for the tasks you choose to complete.
- For the Complaint Email: What is the single most important feeling you want the guest to have after reading your email? What specific offer can you make?
- For the Internal Memo: What are the two most important instructions your staff must follow? How can you state them with absolute clarity?
- For the Social Media Post: What is the key positive message you want the public to see, despite the problem?
📝 Final Capstone Project: The Professional Response
This is your final capstone project. Your task is to complete at least two of the three communication tasks from the scenario. Write the full email, memo, or social media post for each one (approx. 100-150 words each).
Focus on demonstrating your C2 mastery of register, tone, and stylistic variation. This is your opportunity to show how you can deploy grammar and vocabulary strategically to solve real-world professional challenges.
Congratulations on reaching this final stage of your English language journey!
