C1 Activity: Peer Review & Editing Sessions

What you will learn: By the end of this lesson, you will be able to provide effective, constructive feedback on a classmate's writing using the "Compliment Sandwich" method.

Model: Giving Effective Feedback ✍️

Your goal is not to criticize, but to be a helpful "test reader." Let's look at an example. First, here is a short paragraph written by a student:

Tourism is very important for Cambodia. It provides many jobs for people. But sometimes it can cause problems like pollution. We need to find a balance.

Now, here is a model of good feedback using the "Compliment Sandwich" method:

(Positive Opener) → "I really liked how you started with a strong, clear topic sentence. Your point about tourism being important for jobs is excellent and easy to understand."

(Suggestion) → "The idea about 'problems like pollution' is interesting. Have you considered adding a specific example of pollution to make that point even stronger for the reader?"

(Positive Closer) → "Overall, this is a great start to a persuasive paragraph. The argument is balanced, and I think adding that one specific detail would make it very effective."

How it Works: The Compliment Sandwich

This proven method ensures your feedback is balanced and well-received.

1. The Top Slice (Positive): Start by telling the writer something you genuinely liked. Be specific!
2. The "Meat" (The Suggestion): Clearly and politely point out one area for improvement. Asking questions can help the writer think.
3. The Bottom Slice (Positive): End with an overall positive and encouraging comment.

Your Reviewer's Toolkit 🛠️

Peer Review Checklist

When you read your partner's essay, use this checklist to guide your thoughts.

  • Is there a clear thesis statement?
  • Does each body paragraph have a clear topic sentence?
  • Is the argument easy to follow with good linking words?
  • Does the writer use a variety of advanced sentence structures?
  • What is the single strongest part of the essay?
  • What is one part that could be made clearer?

Language for Giving Feedback

To Give Positive Feedback:

  • "I really liked how you..."
  • "Your use of [...] was very effective."

To Make a Gentle Suggestion:

  • "Have you considered...?"
  • "I was a little unclear about this section. Perhaps you could..."

Your C1 Capstone Mission ⭐

Task: The Peer Review Session

Now it's time to put this into practice. This activity is your final task for the C1 level.

  1. Find a partner. Exchange the argumentative or discursive essays you have written previously.
  2. Read your partner's essay carefully two times, using the "Peer Review Checklist" to help you analyze it.
  3. On a separate piece of paper, write a short "Compliment Sandwich" (3-5 sentences) for your partner, using the polite language from the toolkit.
  4. Meet with your partner and discuss your feedback respectfully. Listen carefully to the feedback you receive. The goal is for both of you to learn and improve.

Congratulations on applying your advanced English skills in a practical, collaborative way!
