Crazy Modifiers

កំហុសការដាក់ទីតាំងពាក្យបញ្ជាក់ន័យ

A modifier is a word or phrase that describes something. If you put it in the wrong place, your sentence will sound very funny (and wrong)!

Modifier គឺជាពាក្យ ឬកន្សោមពាក្យដែលប្រើសម្រាប់បញ្ជាក់ន័យ។ ប្រសិនបើអ្នកដាក់វានៅខុសទីតាំង ប្រយោគរបស់អ្នកនឹងមានន័យខុសស្រឡះ ឬគួរឲ្យចង់សើច!

A modifier must be placed right next to the word it describes!

❌ The man walked the dog in a tuxedo. (សត្វឆ្កែពាក់អាវធំធុចស៊ីដូ? អត់ទេ!)
✅ The man in a tuxedo walked the dog. (បុរសដែលពាក់អាវធំ... ត្រូវដាក់វានៅជិត 'The man')

កំហុសពាក្យបញ្ជាក់ន័យដែលគ្មានប្រធាន

A dangling modifier describes a word that is missing from the sentence!

Hungry, the pizza was eaten. (ភីហ្សាឃ្លាន? មិនមែនទេ មនុស្សជាអ្នកឃ្លាន!)
Hungry, I ate the pizza. (ដោយសារតែឃ្លាន ខ្ញុំបានញ៉ាំភីហ្សា។ ប្រធាន "I" ត្រូវតែនៅជាប់ពីក្រោយ។)

របៀបកែតម្រូវ
1. Move the phrase closer: ❌ I served sandwiches to the kids on paper plates. ✅ I served sandwiches on paper plates to the kids.
2. Add the correct subject: Walking in the park, a bird flew by. While I was walking in the park, a bird flew by.
warning The "Only" Trap!

The word 'only' changes everything!

(ពាក្យ "only" ត្រូវតែដាក់នៅជាប់នឹងពាក្យដែលវាចង់បញ្ជាក់ន័យ បើមិនដូច្នោះទេអត្ថន័យនឹងប្រែប្រួលទាំងស្រុង!)
Only I ate pizza.
(No one else ate pizza. Just me.)
I ate only pizza.
(I didn't eat pasta or salad. Just pizza.)

Teacher, why do native speakers make these mistakes if it's their own language?

Hi Panha! Excellent question. Native speakers make these mistakes because our brains know exactly what we *mean*, so we don't always check the grammar logic of what we *wrote*. That's why proofreading your essays is so important at the B2 level! 🕵️‍♂️

Can a modifier go at the very end of a sentence?

Yes, Minea! It can go at the end, as long as it is right next to the noun it modifies. For example: "He fed the cat wearing a red collar." (The cat has the collar, so it's correct!). But if you write "He fed the cat wearing a tuxedo," people will think the cat is wearing a tuxedo! 🤵🐈
