Conjunctions of Contrast

We use these words to connect two ideas that are opposite or surprising.

យើងប្រើពាក្យទាំងនេះដើម្បីភ្ជាប់គំនិតពីរដែលផ្ទុយគ្នា ឬគួរឱ្យភ្ញាក់ផ្អើល។

The Classic "But" 🧱

ការប្រើប្រាស់ But

Rule: Connects two main ideas. Usually in the middle.

(ភ្ជាប់គំនិតសំខាន់ពីរ។ ច្រើនតែនៅកណ្តាលប្រយោគ។)

It rained heavily , but we still played football.

ភ្លៀងធ្លាក់ខ្លាំង ប៉ុន្តែពួកយើងនៅតែលេងបាល់ទាត់។

Although & Even though 🔗

ការប្រើប្រាស់ Although / Even though

Rule: Can be at the beginning or middle. "Even though" is stronger.

(អាចនៅដើម ឬកណ្តាលប្រយោគ។ "Even though" មានន័យធ្ងន់ជាង។)

Although it rained heavily , we played football.

ទោះបីជាភ្លៀងធ្លាក់ខ្លាំងក៏ដោយ ក៏ពួកយើងនៅតែលេងបាល់ទាត់។

We played football even though it rained heavily.

ពួកយើងនៅតែលេងបាល់ទាត់ ទោះបីជាភ្លៀងធ្លាក់ខ្លាំងក៏ដោយ។

The Informal "Though" 🗣️

ទម្រង់ក្រៅផ្លូវការ (និយមនិយាយ)

Rule: Same meaning as "although", but more common in speaking. It can also go at the end!

(មានន័យដូច "although" តែវាអាចនៅចុងប្រយោគបាន!)

I didn't study much. I passed the test , though!

ខ្ញុំមិនសូវបានរៀនទេ។ ប៉ុន្តែខ្ញុំប្រឡងជាប់!

Grammar Trap! ⚠️

Don't use BOTH in one sentence!

(ក្នុងភាសាខ្មែរយើងនិយាយ "ទោះបីជា...ប៉ុន្តែ..." តែអង់គ្លេសមិនអាចប្រើ Although និង But ក្នុងប្រយោគតែមួយបានទេ។)

Good question, Chanda! They mean the same thing, but "even though" is stronger and more emphatic. We use it when the contrast is very surprising! 🌟
