Grammar: Irregular Comparatives & Superlatives

B1 Lesson 18

What you will learn: By the end of this lesson, you will be able to correctly use common irregular comparatives and superlatives like better, the best, worse, and the worst.

Breaking the Rules

While most adjectives follow the standard rules for comparatives (-er/more) and superlatives (-est/most), some of the most common adjectives in English are irregular. This means they have special forms that you must memorize.

Good → Better → The Best

We never say "gooder" or "the goodest".

Example: My mother's soup is the best in Siem Reap!

Bad → Worse → The Worst

We never say "badder" or "the baddest".

Example: Monday morning has the worst traffic of the week.

In Conversation

Sophea: The weather today is worse than yesterday. It's so hot!
Dara: I agree. Let's go to the new cafe. I heard their air conditioning is the best in town.
